Laughter After Death

At the end of May 2026, my Grandfather passed away in the hospital bed he had been in for the last three years. Korean funerals are long and open to anyone that wants to pay respects to the deceased. Over the course of the three days, over 500 people came to say their farewells.

I took these photos on the first day our family could spend time together with no one else around. Although it was loss that brought us together in my Grandma’s apartment in Seoul, I have never felt luckier for my family. We told stories, we played with my nephew, we laughed, we cried.

Perhaps these photos will only really mean something for me, but I hope that you can feel the love and warmth that was there that day.
